The Role of IT in Modern Technology

Note: this document is a working copy and is subject to change!

This is the initial working title of a course prepared for the Bydgoszcz University of Economy, Bydgoszcz, Poland in Spring 2012. Whetherit will be a recurring subject, remains to be seen yet.

The course will be offered as a short lecture session for both regular and distance education students - the latter will have a somewhat shorter course. After the lecture session, the grading will be done online (likely using Moodle) by a test covering all topics. Both slides and full texts will be made available online - slides will go to SlideShare and the snapshot of yearly texts (that the test is based upon) likely to Scribd, this working version here will also continue to be available.

Syllabus

Regular version

The course is by nature an amalgamation of several earlier courses (both Estonian and English), customized for the context of BUE. Some of the material will be tailored later.

Each topic is supposed to take a short lecture of one academic hour (45 minutes). Due to the limited time for lectures, some of the texts will actually contain more material than covered by the real-time lecture.

1. Information society? (the overall role of technology in learning, work and other aspects of society)
2. The long road: from ENIAC to iPad (a historical perspective)
3. New media, Web 2.0, social software... (new media overview)
4. The rise and fall of intellectual property (legal issues - the WIPO framework of copyright, patents, trade marks etc vs FLOSS and the Free Culture)
5. Censorship and privacy in the Age of Facebook (censorship and privacy issues)
6. The Dark Side: from first viruses to the malware industry (the world of malware and cybercrime)
7. Hackers: the techno-culture (the mindset behind Linux and open source movement)
8. The lesson of Linux: why give stuff away? (the basics of the Free Culture)
9. The weird ways of online communication (the points and pitfalls of communicating on the Net; also some netiquette)
10. Cyberwars: politics and technology (the influence of ICT to the global politics)
11. The Equalizer: assistive technology and people with disabilities (using ICT to empower people with disabilities; special hard- and software)
12. Of Hobbits, Amish, hackers and technology (a philosophical ending to the course)
